It is good to have an end to journey toward, but it is the journey that matters in the end.
It's time to think about travel differently. To discover the places in between. Trip-Hop can show you directly connected places by train, coach or boat.
Hi, I'm Howard.
Over the last few years, I've been travelling around Europe and seeing what our fab continent has to offer.
These days I'm less interested in where I'm going to and want to know more about where I'm going through.
I love getting off the train (or coach - I've become a fan) and going for a mooch around the places I used to fly over.
The trouble is that transport information is a bit of a mess. I've made Trip-Hop to try and make planning trips a bit easier - and maybe a bit more fun.
This site is currently in Beta - your feedback will help me make it as useful as possible. Email me here or fill in this form. Thanks.
Here are some sites that have inspired me.
There are so many ways to buy tickets for travel by train, coach and boat. Most operators have their own websites and there are links in the travel details of each hop. However, you may find it more convenient using a ticketing specialist when travelling with more that one operator. Here are some options:
Buying an Interrail Pass makes a lot of sense if you want flexible travel on trains that would be expensive when booking last minute.
If you'd like to see what there is to see and do, here are some sites with ideas:
*Just so you know, I get a small commission from some of the services offered in these links. This helps me run Trip-Hop for free.
If you want to stroll without a care in the world, including your luggage, you could try using Bounce to find a place that will take your bags.
Here are some videos I've made while traveling around - youtube.com/@trip.hop.travel.
Come along on a day-trip from Aachen for a cycle ride along the Vennbahn - a geo-political anomaly with dragons’ teeth
What was it about Arles in France’s Provence that inspired Vincent van Gogh to paint some of the world’s best loved art? Let’s go see!.
Ever wondered what walking the Camino is like? I’ve come to the neat-as-a-pin town of Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port which is one of the most popular starting points for the Camino Frances (French Way)…
If, like me, you like to travel and use trains, you may well need to cross Paris to get from one station to another. And while there’s plenty of advice on how to do this quickly and easily, I thought we could do something very Parisian instead. Let’s go for a stroll!
Come with me and art expert Anna as we take a stroll through the surreal world of Salvador and explore the too-often-overlooked outdoor artworks at the Dali Theatre Museum in Figueres. We let Dali show us who - and what - he thought was worthy of praise, the lengths - and heights - he went to to pay homage to them and a delve into his richly-fed, unlocked mind. You’ll never look at bread, eggs or cheese in the same way again.
Figueres is a great place to come to when travelling to Spain by train. I attempt to answer a question that’s been keeping me awake at night. Why do the bells ring every few minutes - even through the night…
Let’s go on an evening walk around the medieval quarter of Girona and see the El Call - the Jewish quarter, and the Cathedral which provides a backdrop to Game of Thrones.
Let’s catch the train to Llançà on the Costa Brava and explore a curious feature on its crinkly coast - a little bit of the P-Line, Franco’s version of the Maginot Line and Siegfried Line.
Nîmes is a great place to stop when taking train to Spain. Let’s go for a walk from the Gare de Nimes and walk towards the Roman arena and then stroll through the town to the other Roman sites like the Maison Caree and the Tour Magne.
I’m in the lively old city of Pamplona that’s brimming with things to explore and to help me find my way around the place, I’ve met up with local guide Mikel who’s been giving me some insider-info on how to make the most of my time here.
I’m in Portbou, a small Spanish border town that I’ve stopped off at on my way to Spain by train. I’ve come here to see a memorial to the eclectic thinker and flaneur Walter Benjamin.
Let’s take the Smugglers’ Route from Puigcerda to Enveitg and walk over the border from Spain to France - and learn a bit of history on the way.
This time we go see Sète, which is a great place to go to by train and an ideal stopover on the way to Spain.
We’re stopping off at Vic to see and experience something unique. The walls of Sant Pere Cathedral are covered in incredible murals The murals of Josep Maria Sert were made to replace the ones destroyed during the Spanish Civil War. Painted while the Second World War was still tearing Europe apart, they offer a disturbing view of (in)humanity and perhaps, the power of redemption.
Here's a selection of things I've written about on my travels. You can find more at Trip-Hop Travels.
It’s a lot easier to learn from history when you’re with a good teacher and standing in the right place. Slavonski Brod is one of those places and I think Goran is the right teacher.
I hadn’t planned to stop in Barcelona. I was just going to grab some breakfast on my way from Tarragona to the Pyrenees, but the pull of the pedals, spurred on by my time in Valencia, was too strong.
It’s a beautiful Sunday morning in Lübeck, Germany and I’m meeting up with Jürgen and Andrea outside the Rathaus or town hall. They are volunteer Greeters and are going to show me around their town.
Finland is very proud of its architectural tradition. We can learn about that by taking a tram ride through the city, starting at the main railway station.
There's something about looking at a live departure board that just inspires new adventures.
