How to get to Austria flight-free

Being in the centre of Europe makes it one of the most accessible places to get to by train or coach.

Travelling to Vienna by train

There are so many great ways to end up in Vienna. The typical routes from London involve going down the high speed lines shown here. map

There are fantastic places to stop en-route like:

  • Aachen, a spa resort steeped in the history of the Holy Roman Empire
  • Cologne, evokitively set on the Rhine
  • Frankfurt, modern day centre of European finance but also the home of Goethe
  • Nuremberg, with its castle, Durer and tasty sausages
  • Regensburg, pretty town with the dramatic Wallhalla nearby

Here are some popular train routes to Austria

Getting to Austria by coach

Travelling from Northern Europe to Vienna by coach in one go is… character building, taking 15 hours from Trier or 20 hours from Antwerp.

However, before rulling out coach travel all together, it’s worth remembering that while coaches may (usually) be slower than trains but they have some advantages…

  1. they are (usually) cheaper
  2. they go over hills, sometimes taking you through beautiful scenery (my favourite route in to Spain is by coach)
  3. there are more roads than rails so you can reach the parts that trains can’t reach
  4. they can be incredibly flexible - railway infrastructure is complex…

You can break the journey up, by hopping off at some fantastic places on the way like: Passau and Regensburg.
