Nestled between the Voges and Jura Mountain ranges, Belfort's location has made it a popular place for human habitation and also a place worth fighting over. The Lion of Belfort is a sculpture that symbolises the resistance against the siege in the Franco-Prussian War. Frédéric Bartholdi, who designed it, shortly afterwards built the Statue of Liberty in New York. The Belfort Citadel is unique example of Vauban pentagonal fortifications.
