A quiet town in the Charente-Maritime department, southwestern France. Formerly the home of the Surgères 48 Hour Race which has not been run since 2011. A large castle and the Romanesque church were built in Surgere in the 12th century. Of the original castle the Tour Helene and parts of the ramparts remain.
