Montauban is a historic bastide town founded in 1144 and largely constructed using the attractive pink stone found in the region. It stands on the right bank of the Tarn at its confluence with the Tescou. Connecting Montauban to the suburb of Villebourbon is a remarkable early 14th century bridge.
