Giovanni Boccaccio was born here, who used these words to describe the village: 'Certaldo is a castle in our countryside, which, although small, was already inhabited by noblemen and wealthy people'. The village still tells the story of the great poet, first of all in the house that housed him during his last years of life and in the church of Saints Jacopo and Filippo, located in Certaldo Alta, where his remains lie.
